Doubling income through off season vegetables

Doubling income through off season vegetables

Training and technical support from KVK Serchhip helped Lalsangliana adopt low-cost polyhouses and off-season vegetable production, substantially improving farm income.

Situation

Lalsangliana of Chekawn village, Serchhip District, had been cultivating seasonal vegetables using traditional methods but received low prices during periods of surplus supply.

Response

In 2018, he attended an on-campus training programme conducted by KVK Serchhip and was exposed to improved farming technologies. With technical support and inputs from KVK, he constructed a 100 m² low-cost polyhouse and successfully cultivated tomato. He later constructed another 500 m² polyhouse and began off-season production using crop rotation.

Result

The source reports that his annual income increased from about ₹60,000 to ₹2,63,100, with a net income of ₹1,63,100, from off-season vegetables, livestock and fruit crops.

Evidence

Vegetable vendors began purchasing his produce directly, and farmers from nearby villages became interested in adopting the technology. The story also records that he was awarded “Best Innovative Farmer” by ICAR CRIDA on its 38th Foundation Day in 2022.
