Hobby turns Profession in Nagaland

Scientific bee-keeping training transformed a traditional village activity into a profitable profession for H. L. Yimchunger, who later became a master trainer for other farmers.

Situation

Yakor village in Tuensang district has a long tradition of bee-keeping. H. L. Yimchunger initially knew little about scientific bee farming but began rearing bees on a small scale after attending training programmes.

Response

He attended several bee-keeping programmes, including state-level awareness and technology-transfer training and advanced training for para-apiarists. These programmes introduced scientific techniques that helped him improve his bee-keeping enterprise.

Result

The source reports that he expanded to around 65–70 bee hives, producing approximately 350 kg of honey annually and generating about ₹1.40 lakh in annual income.

Evidence

He was awarded the best bee-keeping farmer from Tuensang district during the 1st Nagaland Honey Bee Day in 2018 and later served as a master trainer, encouraging collective bee-keeping and improved marketing in his village.
