Success through cherry Pepper Cultivation in South Sikkim

Support from the Agriculture Department helped Reetu Manger adopt scientific cherry pepper cultivation, improve income and participate in a grower cluster linked to marketing opportunities.

Situation

Mrs. Reetu Manger of Sanganath, South Sikkim, had a strong interest in farming and agri-business and was looking for a crop that could provide better returns.

Response

Officials from the Agriculture Department, Sikkim visited her farm and supported her with horticulture inputs such as manure and organic pesticides. She adopted scientific cultivation practices, including plastic mulch, following the guidance of extension officials.

Result

The source reports that her annual income reached ₹2.7 lakh in the previous year.

Evidence

She became associated with a “Cherry Pepper Grower Group”, where the cluster approach supported input procurement, technical guidance and marketing. The source reports that the cluster sold 15 metric tonnes in the season through a tie-up with Sikkim Supreme Company.
