Situation
Mr. Protul Bania was an underemployed youth cultivating crops conventionally and looking for an alternative income source requiring relatively low investment.
Response
EEI (NE Region) organized a “Skill development for vermi-compost producer” training affiliated with the Agriculture Skill Council of India in May 2019. Mr. Bania attended the 200-hour training over about one month and was motivated to produce vermicompost for sale and for use on his own farm.
Result
He constructed five vermicompost units and produced around 10 quintals of vermicompost, using part in vegetable cultivation and selling around 5 quintals in the market. He subsequently expanded into high-value vegetables such as king chilli, capsicum and broccoli using vermicompost.
Evidence
The story records that he also began training others in his village and aspired to develop a local “vermi-village” by helping unemployed youth learn the technology.
